Comfortable ADU for Family in Alamo, CA
Client Need
These Alamo homeowners, moving from New Jersey to California for family proximity, required an ADU on the property. This allowed their relative to have a comfortable, nearby space of his own while maintaining a sense of independence.
Challenge
In a constrained space, we aimed to craft an expansive open floor plan that not only provides ample room but also accommodates the client’s future needs as family members transition to using a wheelchair.
Solution
For seamless accessibility, the ADU was constructed with a new deck connecting it to the existing deck of the main house, facilitating easy movement between the two residences. To further enhance accessibility, hands-free door openers were installed on the patio doors of both the ADU and main house.

Inside, durable and low-maintenance engineered hardwood flooring extends throughout the home, providing an ideal surface for accommodating a beloved 100 lb pet. All electrical switches and numerous outlets were upgraded to “smart” switches/outlets, enabling wireless control via phone. Keyless, keypad locks were installed on all entry doors for added convenience, eliminating the need for carrying keys.
The kitchen boasts paint-grade maple cabinets and Silestone quartz countertops, elevating the space with sophistication. Warmth and character are infused into the kitchen with brass plumbing fixtures and cabinet hardware.
In the bathroom, a transitional-style porcelain tile floor complements the space, while pewter plumbing fixtures add a unique and masculine touch. The bathroom features a “zero entry” shower, eliminating the need to step over a curb and facilitating easy entry in a wheelchair. Additional features include a floating bench and a hand-held shower for comfortable bathing, supporting aging in place. The shower walls are made of solid white fabricated marble panels with a tile-pattern finish, ensuring easy maintenance while providing a luxurious aesthetic.
Result
Despite the challenge of limited space, we successfully created an open floor plan that not only offers ample room but also caters to future accessibility needs, ensuring comfort and independence for the client.
