Lafayette Room Addition

Designing and Building a functional bedroom, bathroom and homework station

Mirrored closet doors and LED can lights make getting ready a breeze.
A skylight and task lighting ensure plenty of illumination for this study space.
Two large windows let in plenty of natural light for this bedroom.
This well-lit homework station includes a built-in desk and a chalkboard painted wall.
An easy to clean cultured granite grey pearl shower wall slab lines the shower walls.

Challenge

This family came to Gayler Design Build to create a room addition, with a request for a unified, functional space that was both modern and classic and easy to maintain. With four kids in tow, there was a need for a new bedroom, bathroom and a homework station, which could double as a place for the kids to create art.

There was limited room to build the addition, up against the setback and close to the hillside, so the foundation for the addition also acted as a retaining wall. The roof had to be designed as a gable in order to tie into the existing second story and allow an eight-foot-high ceiling in the new addition. The location of the addition also required re-routing gas and water lines.

Solution

The well-lit functional workspace was designed with a built-in art desk, a black chalkboard painted wall, and plenty of task lighting, complete with a skylight. The bedroom and bathroom were integrated into the new space and designed for the client’s teenage daughter—made to reflect her unique teen style.

Lining the bathroom shower walls is a Cultured Granite grey pearl shower wall slab, which is easy to clean. A white vanity cabinet with a marble countertop was installed, and the hardware was replaced with fun, antique brass bar pulls to give it a fresh, custom look. To add a touch of sparkle and warmth, contemporary plumbing fixtures were chosen in polished nickel. Luxury Vinyl Tile flooring (LVT) was installed with dark grey grout, as a warmer and softer alternative to porcelain tile. Other features of the bathroom include a striking accent wall painted in Kelly Moore, Lamp Post, which creates a beautiful contrast to the antique brass and white materials. A round antique brass mirror, with articulating arm wall sconces, finish off the room beautifully.

The new bedroom was designed to reflect the teenager’s personality, giving her a space that she could call her own—making sure to include mirrored closet doors, LED can lights, and two large windows to let in plenty of natural light.

Result

The clients were very happy with their new addition that achieved the look they were after.
